I broadly agree with professor Osofisan's analysis of the shortcomings of Nollywood.I also agree with his rejection of censorship. But i think he put the cart before the horse when he called for collaboration of film makers and writer/dramatists.
The first thing we need to do is to have an efficient film market. An efficient film market will reward excellence while penalizing mediocrity. To develop an efficient film market,we need to have a college of reviewers drawn from our best newspaper, television, radio outlets as well theater film fraternity. This college would review all films prior to release and rate them according to a set of agreed criteria on a scale of 1 to 5.
The top category(5) would be reserved for the films that meet the strictest standards.Once the public is educated as to meanings of these ratings, they will patronize only the best films thus putting the quacks out of business. Once the film makers realize that only good films will be profitable, they will no further encouragement to seek out the writers.
The collaboration that professor Osofisan seeks, will be a consequence of market forces not moral suasion.
